Office of Information Technology

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is committed to leveraging technology to support our students’ pursuits of their academic achievements. The mission of the Office of Information Technology is to:

  • Empower the user community to achieve the highest level of academic and administrative success through the effective use of information technologies
  • Facilitate academic innovations in teaching, learning, research and scholarship
  • Deliver excellent technology services in support of City College’s mission

The OIT is committed to collaborating with the college community to provide excellent information technology products and services. We recognize that the College community has the best chance to succeed when we within the OIT strive for excellence and uphold the highest standards in our daily operations.

Recognizing that many of our non-traditional students work demanding jobs and support extended families, we have made recent investments to optimize accessibility and convenience. Students can use remote technology from home or work to access academic software installed on workstations on campus. Smart lecture halls and classrooms have been outfitted with audiovisual and telecommunications enhancements to facilitate remote instruction and recording lectures to make them available online. To accommodate the multitude of technology devices in use on campus, we continuously upgrade and expand our wireless infrastructure to improve connectivity and bandwidth throughout the college.

In response to the covid-19 pandemic, under the stewardship of our Vice President of Operations and Chief Information Officer, safeguarding the health and well-being of our college community is a paramount concern. In addition to many other technology investments, we recently upgraded the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems throughout the college to ensure clear air filtration. 

The OIT is responsible for software applications, hardware support, telecommunications, media services, network infrastructure, instructional technologies application development,  and information security. In addition to providing technical support services to the College community we also initiate technology enhancement projects and implement innovative solutions to technology-based issues to improve campus life.

As College populations become more and more technology savvy, the professional skills development of the OIT staff has become extremely important. We are committed to staying current with the high-level trends of technology and their corresponding impact on education with constant training for our staff.

The OIT houses two general computer labs to facilitate the technology needs of our students. (1) The North Academic Center (NAC) General Student Lab, which hosts over 100 Windows-based computers; and (2) the cITy Tech Center, City College’s state-of-the-art computing, learning and training resource center. Located on the ground floor of the Cohen Library in the North Academic Building, room NA 1/301, these facilities are designed to accommodate student learning in a variety of stimulating configurations. The Tech Center provides the following services:

  • Over 300 workstations
  • Seven printers (five general-use, one color, and one wifi enabled)
  • Two Active Learning Classrooms (capacity of 35 students in each) 
  • Ten media study rooms (MSR) with dual-flat panel displays that accommodate from three to six students
  • Fifteen two-person study rooms equipped with Windows or Macintosh desktop workstations
  • Three smart classrooms containing 32, 35 and 50 workstations, high definition projectors, and, in the largest classroom, a podium with AV controls and laptop connections.
  • Over 80 single-use desktop computers in the open bays, many are also configured to allow remote login

The workstations are configured the college’s site-licensed software, including Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office 365, Matlab, SAS, and SPSS. The spatial configurations accommodate students who choose to work individually, as well as provide incentives for student collaboration.

In addition to the computer labs managed by the OIT, many academic departments have their own computers labs for the students in their curriculum. The OIT has worked together with many of these academic departments to make the computers available from off-campus.

For students, the IT Service Desk acts as a one-stop point of contact for campus-wide information technology support for a wide range of services, including:

  • Technology support configuring mobile devices (including tablets, smart phones, and laptops) to access college resources
  • CUNYfirst support
  • Blackboard support
  • Accessing general use site-licensed software
  • Using CCNY’s e-mail system (Citymail)
  • Account login and password reset

This one-stop shop solution has given the OIT staff a direct way of engaging the technology needs of students, faculty and staff.

Our Academic Technology Services (ATS) unit is responsible for the design and implementation of audiovisual (AV) technology in classrooms, lecture halls, and conference rooms across campus.

ATS also oversees the campus-wide Digital Signage system, Zoom conferencing platform, and iMEDIA Reservation Desk.  In addition, ATS provides guidance to faculty and administrators on best practices to use, design, and implement AV technology.  

ATS provides the following services:

  • Classroom AV technology support
  • Audio-visual resources for loan
  • Student device loaners including laptops, tablets and internet hotspots
  • Digital Signage services
  • Zoom conferencing services

The College has over 150 Smart Classrooms that are outfitted with a display or projector and projection screen, audio speakers and a wired or wireless interface for use with laptops, tablets, document cameras and other AV devices.
